Relationship Therapy Centre

Why Work With Us

As humans, we have two fundamental needs; to be connected with ourselves, and to experience belonging with others.

When we shift our perspective from criticism, internally or externally, and turn to curiosity, we begin to create space for compassion, accountability, change, and growth.

Our Approach

How Our Couples Therapy Works

1st Session: Meet Together

We get to know you as a couple, with unique lived histories and experiences within the relationship. We learn about how you met, what brought you together and how you knew this was someone you wanted to connect with further. We aim to get clear on what holds you together, and learn about the problem that is getting in the way of how you want to be in your relationship.

2nd Sessions: Meet Individually

We spend time getting to know each of you more deeply; your relationship histories outside of this partnership, a fuller understanding of your experience of this relationship, and how you want your story to unfold. Together, we will identify areas for personal accountability, and explore what you desire to have changed from your partner and in the relationship.

Continued Sessions: Meet Together

We identify where the concerns began, and what the impacts of these concerns have felt like. Together, we establish goals for our work, and develop a plan to achieve preferred outcomes. At various time we provide assignments for ongoing progress between sessions.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Exploring therapy takes time and commitment, and it’s not uncommon for one person to be more invested at the beginning. Consider a free consultation to test the waters. Alternatively, try 1-2 sessions without any commitment in order to assess the fit. Individual therapy can also impact relationships positively. It is a common misconception that to work on a relationship most effectively all parties of the relationship need to be in therapy together. If one person shows up differently in any interaction or relationship, it often leads to small but not insignificant change for the relationship at large.
Couples therapy isn’t just for relationships in crisis; it’s also for those navigating uncertainties, life transitions or difficult to navigate dynamics or situations. At Relationship Therapy Centre, we assist in understanding doubts, fears, and uncertainties, fostering a healthy decision-making process. Our role is to provide clarity for your best decision, whether it’s staying together or parting ways amicably. Individual therapy is also available for those seeking a more private exploration.
There’s no wrong time for couples therapy; it varies based on each person’s relationship goals. Whether you’re deciding to stay together, seeking a meaningful separation, or aiming to strengthen your bond, therapy can provide the support you both need. Consider couples therapy if you and your partner see the potential in trained professional guidance being supportive for you in understanding how to best move forward.
Personalized therapy timelines vary based on factors like each partner’s concerns, commitment, and the therapist-client relationship. While 5-10 sessions are recommended for optimal change, timelines for noticeable results differ for each client.
Yes! All individuals who partake in therapy will have their name on invoices and receipts. We can outline who paid for the service, if this is helpful for insurance purposes.

Yes, there is an opportunity for individual sessions in couples therapy. Therapists often start with both joint and individual sessions to assess attachment histories, commitment, safety, and preferred outcomes. This approach allows the therapist to understand each partner’s commitment to the relationship and their satisfaction with it.

At Relationship Therapy Centre, we believe couples therapy is a specialization. All of our therapists offering couples therapy are either with 20+ years of experience or Registered Marriage and Family Therapists (individuals who have met extensive educational and experiential requirements to hold this title) or have been and/or continue to be supervised by one.

There are many factors to consider when looking for a couples therapist including:

Qualifications – What was the therapist’s formal training like for couples therapy? What extra training have they invested in to help ensure their competency in providing couples therapy?

Experience – Approximately how many hours of couples therapy have they provided? How many years have they been providing couples therapy? How much of their experience is consulted about with a more experienced couples therapist?

The Relationship Between the Therapist and Partners – How do you and your partner feel when connecting with the therapist? Do you feel as though you can trust them?

Therapeutic Approaches – Are there specific approaches the therapist uses when supporting couples therapy? How does the therapist see their role as a couples therapist? Does this align with your hope of what a couples therapist might do for you?
