How EMDR Therapy Works
EMDR therapy follows an 8-stage process designed to promote healing and reduce distress, discomfort, and unpredictability. The duration of each stage is not fixed, as it is tailored to the unique needs and circumstances of each individual. We customize the approach to best support your personal healing journey.
1. You and Your Story
We learn about who you are, parts of your history, the challenges you are facing, and the goals you have for therapy. We create a tailored plan unique to you and your circumstances.
2. Preparation
We begin to establish a trusting relationship where the EMDR process is explained, so you know what to expect. You will learn relaxation techniques to help you manage difficult emotions that mary arise in and between sessions.
3. Assessment
We support you in identifying details of traumatic memories or upsetting events that continue to impact your emotional well being. We measure the distress of these experiences that are keeping you stuck and set goals for this work.
4. Desensitization
With the use of bilateral stimulation (e.g. guided eye movements, tapping etc.) we will help you process the traumatic memories. In this stage, your mind reprocesses the memories in a manner that reduces the emotional distress associated with it.
5. Install Positive Beliefs
Once we reduce the distress associated with the traumatic memories, we aim to replace the negative beliefs associated with the memories with positive and supportive ones. This is done using a similar process to that of the desensitization stage.
6. Body Scan for Residual Stress
We support you in navigating a body scan so we can identify whether there are residual tensions remaining. If the trauma does not appear to have been completely reprocessed, stage four and five repeat.
7. Closure
The aim of this stage is to support you in regaining emotional stability and calm. We revisit and implement coping strategies discussed in the preparation stage to support a state of grounding after the reprocessing work that was done.
8. Review Progress
Together, we assess the progress made in reprocessing memories, making time to reflect on lingering tensions and gained insights. Whenever there are residual stressors reprocessing can occur.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is EMDR therapy safe?
Yes, EMDR is a safe and evidence-based therapy approach when working with a qualified EMDR practitioner. While EMDR requires you to think about traumatic memories and distressing experiences, your therapist is trained to guide you through this process at a comfortable pace, guided by you.
Your therapist will also work with you through coping strategies and skills that are aimed at supporting you through the resurfacing of the distressing thoughts.
As with all therapy approaches, you may experience some emotional stress where you begin to feel worse before you feel better. Revisiting distressing memories can be challenging! The process won’t always be linear, but it should be a positive trajectory.
What happens in EMDR therapy?
EMDR aims to support you by processing traumatic memories and work towards healing. This is done by having you focus on a distressing memory while your therapist uses bilateral stimulation (e.g. tracking your eye movements, tapping etc.). Your therapist will work with you in creating positive beliefs in place of the prior, distressing ones. This process helps to reduce emotional distress and improve your sense of safety moving forward.
Can EMDR therapy be done effectively online?
Yes! EMDR can be effectively implemented in online therapy. For online EMDR therapy, the bilateral stimulation can be replaced by visual cues or sounds.
Research has shown that EMDR therapy online can be just as effective as in-person therapy for many!
How long does EMDR take for it to be helpful?
The length of time it will take for EMDR therapy to be effective varies greatly depending on your unique circumstances. The length of time can be influenced by several factors including, but not limited to the severity of the trauma you have faced, the regularity of your sessions, and how quickly you are able to reprocess the distressing experiences.
While you may experience small, but not insignificant shifts after a single session, on average, EMDR therapy is known to helpful somewhere between 8-20 sessions. Your therapist can likely give you an estimated timeline based on your unique circumstances after 1-2 sessions.
What You Can Expect From EMDR Therapy
EMDR has been known to be effective and more efficient than talk therapy on its own. However, it is important to remember that your unique circumstances can influence the process. We tailor therapy treatment plans to you – taking into account your experiences and your goals. Through your tailored process, you may notice that you are:
