FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions
Should we attend these sessions with our child(ren)?
Parenting support sessions begin exclusively with the therapist and parents. The aim of these sessions is to offer parents a space to reflect on their experience of parenthood, co-parenting, their children and more. The work begins as parent-focused to better identify existing patterns, strategies and to create space to identify preferred outcomes and ways forward.
Through the parenting support work, it can be determined that it may be helpful to transition to child therapy and/or family therapy. This can be decided collaboratively between therapist and parents and is done so on a case by case basis taking the unique factors of each parent and family into consideration.
If I have a therapist, should I be assessing parenting support with a different therapist?
If you are seeking therapy already, it may be helpful to consider what the goals are for the work that is being done there, and what the focus and training of the therapist is.
When accessing therapy for parenting support, the main focus is on your role as a parent. This can include how being a parent impacts and effects you, how you experience the co-parenting relationship, and/or how you experience your relationship with your child.
Often times what parents learn about themselves in the context of other therapy (individual, couple or family) is complimentary to the work that can be done in therapy for parenting support. For instance, it can be helpful to be aware of personal traumas and triggers and its impacts and effects with consideration for how this informs your way of showing up day to day or with your kids.
If you are still in doubt whether this service is for you, you can book a free consultation with our parenting support therapists to help you in making a decision!
If my concerns are with my child, how can parenting support help?
If your concerns are primarily about your child, parenting support therapy can still be highly beneficial. Research has shown that often time the power of creating shifts in the parenting dynamics and approaches can allow for shifts in the child(ren).
When parenting support is accessed to tend to concerns about a child, the therapy sessions begin exclusively with therapist and parent(s). This work will include an exploration of what the parent(s) experiences in their child’s behaviour – what their needs and potential triggers are. There may be discussions about what have been effective strategies both for the child(ren) and for the parent(s). These conversations can foster skills and techniques to improve interactions and family dynamics.
The therapist will work collaboratively with the parent(s) to determine the impacts and effects of these conversations on the child’s presenting concerns. It will be determined together, when it may be helpful to shift to include the child(ren) in these sessions.
How do I know if I need parenting support? Shouldn’t I be able to figure this out on my own?
It’s completely normal to feel like you should be able to handle parenting on your own, but the truth is that no one is born knowing how to navigate every challenge that comes with raising a child. Parenting support can be helpful for anyone who feels overwhelmed, unsure, or just wants guidance through difficult situations like behavior issues, co-parenting struggles, or managing stress. It’s not about failing as a parent—it’s about getting the tools and support you need to feel more confident and connected in your role. Sometimes, talking to someone who understands the complexities of parenting can make all the difference in how you approach tough moments.
What if my co-parent and I disagree on how to raise our child?
It’s really common for co-parents to have different parenting styles or approaches, and these differences can sometimes lead to tension or conflict. A therapist can help you and your co-parent explore your individual values, fears, and expectations around parenting in a way that fosters understanding and compromise. The goal isn’t to force you both to parent the same way, but to create more consistency, respect, and collaboration in how you approach raising your child. Therapy can give you tools to communicate better, work through disagreements, and ultimately create a more harmonious environment for your child.
