What If I Don’t Know What I Want to Do With My Life?

If you’ve ever asked yourself, “What am I doing with my life?”,  you’re not alone. Many teens and adults feel unsure about what they want to do in their career, who they want to be, or where they’re headed. Between school, social expectations and pressures, and the constant highlight reels on social media, it can feel like everyone else has their life figured out, except you.

At Relationship Therapy Centre, we often hear from young people that they feel stuck, lost, or anxious about their future. This blog will explore why it’s normal to not know what you want to do with your life, what might be getting in the way of clarity, and how therapy for self discovery can help you discover direction and meaning, at your own pace.

Why It’s Okay Not to Have It All Figured Out

There’s a lot of pressure to “have a plan”: to pick a major, career path, or life goal early on. But the truth is, most people’s paths aren’t linear. Your 20s (and even late teens) are about exploration, not perfection.

It’s normal to feel uncertain because:

  • Your brain is still developing the part that makes long-term, logical decisions.
  • Your interests, values, and goals naturally change as you grow.
  • The world (and job market) is constantly changing and evolving, new opportunities appear all the time.

According to the American Psychological Association, young adulthood is a time of possibilities, uncertainty, and identity exploration, meaning it’s expected that you’ll question what matters to you and what kind of life you want to build.

Feeling behind is a common experience people have when they navigate life, and it can often be a reason many seek therapy support. It’s important to remember you aren’t behind you’re just figuring things out at your own pace. There’s no timeline or rubric for how to do life ‘right’!

Common Reasons You Might Feel Lost

Feeling unsure about your future can come from many places. Understanding what’s underneath that uncertainty can make it easier to move forward:

External Pressure

Parents, teachers, or social media can make you feel like you should know what you want. Social media often makes it seem like everyone has things figured out. This pressure can cause anxiety or self-doubt when your path doesn’t look like someone else’s.

Fear of Making the “Wrong” Choice

It’s hard to make decisions when you’re afraid of making the wrong one. You might worry, “What if I choose the wrong path and regret it later?” But most people change directions (sometimes multiple times). Your choices now don’t have to define you forever.

Perfectionism or Comparison

Seeing others achieve milestones (graduation, new jobs, travel) can make you question your worth. Remember, everyone’s timeline is different, and your pace is valid.

Lack of Self-Knowledge

Sometimes the uncertainty isn’t about the future, it’s about not yet knowing yourself fully. Therapy can help you explore your values, strengths, and interests so that the decisions you make feel more aligned with who you are.

How to Start Finding Direction

You don’t have to have all the answers today. Try starting small with reflection and curiosity.

  1. Ask Questions for Exploration, Not for Final Answers

Instead of “What should I do with my life?”, ask:

  • “What kind of environment helps me thrive?”
  • “What do I value? Creativity, stability, helping others?”
  • “What activities make me lose track of time?”

Your interests can guide you, even if you don’t yet know where they’ll lead you.

  1. Explore, Don’t Commit Right Away

Experiment with classes, volunteering, jobs, or hobbies. Every experience (even the ones you don’t love) teaches you something about what feels to be in alignment and what doesn’t.

  1. Talk It Out

Sometimes your thoughts make more sense when you say them out loud. Talking with a friend, trusted adult, or therapist can help you sort through the noise and see patterns you might not notice on your own.

  1. Practice Self-Compassion

Not knowing doesn’t mean you’re failing. It means you’re human. Remind yourself that it’s okay to pause, explore, and change your mind, over and over again. Growth isn’t a straight line.
